The London-headquartered company, owned by Fenix International Limited, says the ban on adult content will be effective October 1, 2021.

Why is OnlyFans suddenly in the news?

In a tweet, @BBCNews claims "OnlyFans to ban sex videos after BBC investigation."

This BBC News report says it received an internal OnlyFans company compliance manual that shows that "staff are asked to be more lenient towards successful accounts on the British content-sharing service."

This report refers moderation specialists and child protection experts saying OnlyFans "has some "tolerance" for accounts posting illegal content."

BBC News claims OnlyFans announcement on banning explicit adult content including advertisement for prostitution services and bestiality has come after BBC News approached the company for its reaction to the leaked compliance manual.

The report also quotes an OnlyFans statement that says: "We do not tolerate any violation of our terms of service, and we take immediate action to uphold the safety and security of our users."

How does OnlyFans work?

Founded in 2016 by British entrepreneur Tim Stokely, OnlyFans says it helps content creators monetize or make money from their content (images, videos) free of advertisers.

According to abc.net.au, users of the OnlyFans site pay a monthly subscription between $5 to $50 to view feeds. These users are also allowed to ask for exclusive content and offer tips for customized pictures and videos.

The BBC says creators also get paid for sending personal messages to subscribers and OnlyFans takes a 20% cut from all sales and services.

Pocket-Lint.com says OnlyFans is used not only by sex workers. Models, musicians, actors, physical fitness experts and influencers too use this platform for making extra revenue.

These artists receive money directly from fans monthly as well as from a pay-per-view option.

How much do you make on OnlyFans?

InfluenceMarketingHub.com says American actress, model and singer Bella Thorne (Annabella Avery Thorne) made more than $1 million in only 24 hours.

It adds that majority of accounts make less than $145 a month and average earnings is a little more than $180 a month.

MyImperfectLife.com claims American rapper and actress Cardi B (Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar) is reportedly earning $10 million (£7.1 million) a month while UK Love Island season 4 star Megan Barton-Hanson reportedly earns $1.1 million (£807, 559).

SmartLazyHustler.com says you may rake in $5 to $500 on OnlyFans for your feet pics, daily or monthly.

How do you start on OnlyFans?

An OnlyFans blog says you need to follow 5 steps: Create an account for free, set your subscription rate, promote your OnlyFans profile, plan your content, retain your fans.

Why Is Only Fans banning content?

The site says it's putting a stop to sexually explicit content to comply with Safe For Work (SFW) policies and requests from its banking partners and payment providers.

The ABC.net.au says Pornhub operator Mindgeek had previously revised its safety and security policies.

This arose after Pornhub, among the most visited sites on the world wide web, came under pressure from its payment processors partners over reports that it was posting illegal content including child pornography and rape videos.

What's next for OnlyFans?

OnlyFans says it is the go-to platform for over 100 million registered users and more than 1 million creators worldwide.

It says it has paid out over $3 billion in creator earnings.

Last week, the site launched an Safe For Work app OFTV that has no nudity. It shows videos of cooking, workout and music.
